One Note Solo for Improvising Rhythms

In order to improve rhythm when playing the blues, try focusing just on the rhythm rather than what notes to play. Using just one note can help with this. #saxophone #saxophonelessons #bettersax

When I first started out, my mentor told me, "If you can't groove on one note, there's no point in playing all the rest." Thanks for sharing this concept!

Really an interesting thing to think about. I think that technique is also important when improvising. Things like growling, vibrato, articulations, and changes in dynamics can make a one note solo seem genius even in a professional setting.

I just started and honestly this is sort of a game changer.

This is exactly what my director has taught us, and it’s completely true, improvising is all about how you play the notes, not what notes you play.

The key to rhythmic playing is to let the beat look after itself. And just connect with it now and then so it doesn't feel lonely.

Really great way to package the concept, Jay! I struggled a little bit with the idea of written rhythm, so I started improvising solos in the style of singers that I like. Learn the lyrics. Be able to sing the song in your head and then play it.

Singers are great to imitate to find licks and rhythm patterns.

I'm looking through Jerry Bergonzi's book called Melodic Rhythms. It focus on stuff like this too

Hi, thank you so much for your videos I’ve found many of them very helpful. I think this one though about rhythm is what I really want to work on, it’s not natural for me rhythm but as you explain it’s so important! I’ve started learning songs by heart so it allows me to hear my playing better and then I know where I need to improve sound 😊 my names Paul from London, would be nice to meet you where are you based ? Take care !

I think... I'll start my solos with 1 note only (just to get the feeling for the groove first)
