The Dino 246 and 308 GT4 Were Not 'Less-Than' Ferraris — Revelations with Jason Cammisa Ep. 31

Popular lore has taken an out-of-context quote from Enzo Ferrari that "a Ferrari is a twelve-cylinder car" to mean that Il Commendatore thought any car with fewer than twelve cylinders is not worthy of the Ferrari badge. And thus, the Dino Ferraris aren't real Ferraris.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Dino was the name of Ferrari's only one legitimate son, who died young at the merciless hands of Muscular Dystrophy. Dino himself was named after Enzo's father and older brother, both of whom died when Enzo was a teenager.

The "Dino" badge wasn't an insult — it was an honor. And it adorns two of the best-driving Ferrari road cars ever created.

In this episode, automotive journalist Jason Cammisa explains the history of Enzo's Double Ds — the 206/246 Dino and the 308 GT4 Dino — and how they both foretold the future of Ferrari's road cars, both in layout (mid-engine sports car) and in engine (with the 308 GT4's flat-plane-crankshaft V-8.)

17:37 “I never thought a son could leave his father a legacy, but my son did”
So much pain and emotion summed up in so little words.

I simply cannot overstate how awesome Cammisa's "Revelations" series is. The only thing wrong with them is there aren't more of them.

Another tidbit that ads to the Dino legacy, according to Carol Shelby, who considered Dino a close friend, Dino cared far more about road going sports cars than his father, so it's absolutely fitting that 2 of the best driving Ferrari road cars of all time bear his name. To quote old man Shelby, "...I sometimes dream about a world where Dino lived longer, in that world, Ferrari road cars might very well have lived up to their legend."

This is easily one of the best and most memorable car video “docs” I’ve ever seen.

1. History Lesson
2. Documented facts
3. Emotive content
4. Humor
5. Perspective from presentor and the subject being documented

Even the last bit with the driver pov and sounds…

TOP NOTCH!

The 246 Dino is, in my eyes, the most beautiful Ferrari. A fitting tribute for a Father's love for his Son.

I love that Jason's job has basically become "Re-educating the public on dumb stories Jeremy Clarkson once told".

Jason is, bar none, the best automotive presenter in the internet; thanks for this episode, and for the Revelations series!

I remember the first time I ever saw a Dino, it was with my father. He explained to me that it wasn't "really" a Ferrari, though I most certainly could tell by looks alone that it was. I am flying out tonight for my fathers celebration of life and can't express how wonderful the timing of this Revelations is. Thank you Jason.

That bit about Enzo growing old with a dead son and his son leaving him a legacy, was both sublime and devastating.

As amazing as this episode was, your revelations about Enzo's emotions towards his son really hit home for me. I don't have a kid but makes my heart tremble for my father! I honestly appreciate it!

Great video. I have to say that I completely understand Enzo’s depth of grief and pain over the loss of his son Alfredino. My son died on Dec 26th 2020. That pain never ever goes away. It may subside a little but it NEVER goes away.

The 246 GT Dino is my 2nd favourite Ferrari of all time, after the 275 GTB/4. The story of how it came to be is just beautiful too, Enzo was such a great man on many levels. That quote about how his son left him a legacy made me pretty emotional.

The story of Enzo's son hit me like a truck, being a father myself. And as always, thank you and keep up the fantastic work, Jason!

Man, do you guys like to keep us desperate for this incredible content. I feel like a toddler on Christmas day whenever a new episode pops into my feed. As a father of a 22 year old boy, I can't even comprehend the insurmountable pain of such a crushing loss. While nothing can assuage the sorrow, the original Dino is just heart achingly beautiful and such a stunning tribute to a young man taken so soon. Hats off to Hagerty, Jason and the crew for these videos that should be kept in an archive for future generations.

18:23 There’s no better reward to watch a full length video than these. The hairs on the back of my neck stood up just by hearing and watching these machines. Thank you all for your insight and understanding of car guys.
