Dynamic Compute Options for Research Institutes (Cloud Next '18)

This breakout will highlight Fred Hutch’s addition of Google Cloud to their researcher’s portfolio of compute engines. The solution was added with very minimal impact to current operations through the use of automation and Infrastructure as Code technologies. The research team was able to use their existing tools and current processes to submit workloads with only a change to the name of the cluster. The solution was written to extend existing DevOps intellectual property providing a flexible and cost effective cluster by taking advantage of preemptible machines and auto-scale techniques. In our findings, the utilization of automation allowed the solution expanded functionality, increased options while keeping the management at the same level.
