Exclusive: On board a US Navy destroyer patrolling the Mediterranean

The USS James E Williams carries a fearsome arsenal of firepower, including Tomahawk cruise missiles, air-launched torpedoes and anti-ship missiles.

With four gas turbine engines, it can reach speeds of up to 30 knots. The US Navy destroyer also has 360° vision, which enables it to track up to 800 targets more than 200 miles away.

Forces News gained exclusive access to the ship as it kept watch over sea lanes and Nato's adversaries in the Mediterranean as part of the alliance's multi-national task group in the region.

I served on board the USS Voge FF-1047 back in the 80's and this video brought back a lot of memories.

Fun fact James E Williams was the most highly decorated enlisted man in the USN: MOH, Navy cross and other decorations. Passed away in 1999.

best destroyer in the world, amazing work they put in her. Amazing how fast the US builds them too. Keep up the good work, we will need it with how China and Russia are acting

Nice to know that these sailors are out there keeping us safe. I'm a peace loving guy so we need to be prepared to fight to protect that. It's the grand irony of being a human being.

When I was a very young man in high school, I was debating whether to enlist in the Air Force or Navy. I eventually decided on the Air Force, but I've always have had a deep admiration for the men and women of the United States Navy. This was a very interesting video; I suspect if I choose the Navy I would have enjoyed the experience. God bless the good ship and crew of the USS James E. Williams!

I served aboard the Gearing class destroyer USS Henderson DD-785 during the Vietnam War from 1964-'68. I didn't know it at the time but the U.S. Navy was good for me.
