Most of us know about the health benefits of guava fruit. But we’re unaware of the fact that even guava leaves have a whole host of medicinal properties and offer their fair share of health benefits.
In this video, we’ll be sharing some of the best benefits of drinking guava leaves that have been steeped in water to make a tea. Let’s get started!
1. Aid in Weight Loss:
Guava leaf tea can aid in weight loss by preventing complex starches from being converted into sugars. For this purpose, the carbs must be broken down in the liver for use by the body, and guava leaves prevent the transition of carbohydrates to usable compounds.
2. Beneficial for Diabetics
According to recent research, guava leaf tea can effectively lower blood glucose in diabetics. It helps to prevent the absorption of sucrose and maltose by the body, thereby lowering blood sugar levels. Drinking guava leaf tea for 12 weeks is said to lower blood sugar levels without increasing insulin production.
3. Lower Cholesterol
Research has proved that drinking guava leaf tea for 3 months can lead to reduction in LDL or bad cholesterol and triglycerides – without any adverse effect on good cholesterol. Besides, the guava leaves are a great liver tonic.
4. Treatment of Diarrhea and Dysentery
Guava leaves are a popular herbal remedy for diarrhea and dysentery, especially in some eastern countries. They have anti-bacterial properties that help prevent further microbial growth in the intestines and make the area more alkaline. They also reduce the production of extra mucus that can irritate the digestive system.
5. Aids in Digestion
Guava leaf tea aids in digestion by stimulating digestive enzyme production. The powerful antibacterial agents kill bacteria in the lining of the gut and stop proliferation of toxic enzymes by bacteria. Guava leaves are particularly beneficial when treating food poisoning, and are also effective in soothing vomiting and nausea.
6. Treatment of Bronchitis
Despite guava leaves being used as a natural remedy for bronchitis for years, there isn’t much scientific evidence to support this remedy.
However guava leaves can be helpful if you’ve got a cold. The high levels of vitamin C and iron in unripe tropical fruit help reduce mucus productions and prevent the spread of bacteria.
7. Treatment of Toothaches, Sore Throats and Gum Disease
Due to their anti-inflammatory qualities, fresh guava leaves can relieve tooth ache, heal gum and mouth sores and treat sore throats when used for gargling. The antibacterial agent in these leaves protect the teeth and gums. For this reason, guava leaves are often used as an ingredient in toothpastes and mouth fresheners. If you fancy a break from guava leaf tea, why not try using some of your spare guava leaves as a natural paste at home for brushing the teeth and gums?
8. Beneficial in Dengue Fever
Guava leaves are considered a natural remedy for dengue fever. This is because guava leaf extract can increase the number of platelets in the blood and is not toxic at all.
9. Prostate Cancer
Some information online suggests that guava leaves, when brewed in tea, can be beneficial in treating and preventing prostate cancer. There are studies to support the idea that guava leaves exhibit anticancer activity in human prostate cells, and that guava leaf extracts play a substantial role in fighting cancer. However, guava leaves should never be used as a remedy for fighting cancer alone – and you should always listen to your doctor’s advice first and foremost.
10. Reduction of Allergies:
As mentioned earlier, guava leaves have a powerful anti-histamine effect, suppressing allergies in the same way as anti-histamine drugs. So if you’re suffering from congestion, sneezing and sniffles due to dust, pollen, pet dander or another common allergen, drinking guava leaf tea is the remedy for you.
11. Sperm Production:
Consumption of guava leaf tea has proven to be effective in increasing sperm production, therefore helping with conception. It sounds pretty unbelievable, but this benefit is backed by findings by Nigerian researchers, who found that the extracts of these leaves have beneficial effects on sperm production and quality, and may even improve the sperm parameters of infertile males.
12. Treatment of Wounds and Infections:
Guava leaves have great healing properties that can treat wounds such as cuts, impact abrasion and so on. The antibacterial agents prevent infection and reduce inflammation to accelerate the healing of wounds. Just brew some guava leaf tea, wait for it to cool, then apply it directly to the wounded skin. Leave until dry. You can repeat this several times a day to help speed up the healing process.
13. Treats Ear Infection
If you don’t have any over-the-counter medication available, you can treat ear infections with guava leaves. You just need to boil a cup of guava leaves and a cup of water in a glass or earthen pot for 15 to 20 minutes.
