Gov. Newsom proclaims state of emergency in Rancho Palos Verdes

California Gov. Gavin Newsom proclaimed a state of emergency on Tuesday for the city of Rancho Palos Verdes amid the ongoing land movement threatening hundreds of homes.

State of disaster? Rancho Palos Verdes has been in a state of mass land movement for over 50 years. I worked on many homes back in the 80s, trying to figure out what was going on - and it was determined that the area was part of a massive landslide. It has been going on for more than 50 years. In fact, this triggered insurance language to change - making earth movement a known peril and being excluded from homeowners insurance policies. It was a landmark matter in insurance law that affected the entire US. So, this is clearly not a state of emergency. These homes have had economic value for decades and are uninsurable or sellable. I am not even sure these homes have had paid property taxes levied for decades.

So, taxes from less affluent people who can barely get by on groceries and are one serious illness away from bankruptcy will be forced to foot the bill so that more affluent people can keep their multi million dollar houses that they knew were built on unstable ground.

At least they have warning to get their things out. Not like a tornado or a fire. How can people stay just to watch their stuff? Just rent a warehouse and rent an apt.

I'm going to build my house next to a volcano and if erupts, I'm suing my state and feds to help rebuild it.

This has been happening since I was a teenager. I’m 68. Pablo’s Verdes has been sliding for years.
I don’t understand why people purchase properties or build on cliffs that are sliding into the water.

Then….on the other hand the Governor is pushing hard to arrest people who are without a roof, for example, Sacramento closed down a camp of Disabled Elders who had FEMA trailers to live in for the past two years with a 24 hour notice. Now those individuals are without a roof.
Two had Seizures, one woman goes to dialysis 3 times a week.
There are no available shelters for people in wheelchairs.

The inequality is insane.
Of course I feel for people who have owned these homes for years and the displacement.
The hills be sliding down since 1970.
Time to prepare.

I hope they don’t end up on the streets, since our governor is going out of his way to locate inexpensive housing for them……😢
