100% spot judgment is the key factor, I don’t charge friends, models in general or performers that are just starting up, however I draw a line when my pictures are used to generate revenue.
It’s a learning curve, the first big mistake I remember doing was back in the early mid nineties, I gave away the negatives of an early gig of Sterephonics at club 100 just before they became a global hit, I thought that their music was awful, little did I know!
On the opposite end a few years ago a friend asked if I could take pictures of her friend, a performer... no problems, it will be fun, a night out helping friends. I got to the venue a little early to get a clear view and prepare myself, as I walk in a lady approached me and asked are you the photographer? ...and you are? I am the organiser I need you to do X, Y, Z... excuse me? I am here to take pictures of Miss ... for her portfolio, you won’t be able to use them without a commercial license release from me. How much do you want then? She asked with weird looking face, to which I told her my commercial rates to be confronted with a “what? To take a few pictures?” and was offered less than half of minimum wage.
I took a sit in the corner, waited for my friend and the performer, explained the situation, apologised for the confusion and inconvenience, offered to take pictures one to one at a different time and went back home.

I very much appreciate your words about my photo(9:40) mate 🥰
Beacuse for me this photo was like "mehhh, too much noises, too dark" I am very critical of my work, and thanks to you I look at it differently now!

Dude this was so so helpful and full of information thank you so much, I always struggle with "self worth" and still to this day I do. But watching this has really helped me in understanding brand photography, cheers Sam.

Once again this is an amazing, informative and educational video! Really helpful as well it's good to know that you did something wrong so then I don't make that mistake and repeat it with myself. Thanks Sam! 👍🏽

It is defintely a tricky one... From my experience, I've only taken gifted collabs if 1 the brand in questions product isn't yet in my portfolio (so I can use that as a showreel when approaching another brand in that niche), or 2 it's a product I believe in and would genuinely use on a daily basis..

I think one lesson we can learn from this is if it's gifted, you need to know what sort of deliverables they are expecting, if they intend to use it for ads then put a % of commission, so you at least get some rewards from the sales.

Love that, I am kind of in the same situation with a smaller tech product I don’t really want to film/shoot. Thanks for sharing this side of running your own brand. 🙌🏼🙌🏼👌🏼

Love the honesty and the message of knowing self worth Sam.

I feel this 100%, last year a company contacted me, sent me some clothes and I got paid 0$, now my pictures are on there website making who knows how much. “Knowing your worth” is key as a creator of any sort!

Really interesting video. You've said this multiple times during your first live streams and through DM too! I'm still in this phase as well, but strongly considering to start a personal carreer and start charging something as well. The way I see it now, is that I don't need to worry about whether my work is good enough to ask money for it as I'm doing it 'for free', haha. Still a lot of stuff I need to improve on, but you're such an inspiration!

Great lesson to learn, thank you so much for sharing it!
As a beginner, I think I would have automatically agreed with just the free product, without thinking of the implications.
