I love those ring-binder manuals, i'd have loved to have these. I really took to the linux manual format when I first used linux and I've never understood why people never go to them first before asking on the web. Of course most linux manuals were hand-me-downs from BSD/Netbsd/Sun at first, that in itself was education, sometimes the the history of a manual started me on a rabbit-hole of its own. That's how I learnt to use computers really, I was as interested in their history as their function, that's how I figured them out.

What a wonderful video. I use Linux at home and at work (and cut my teeth on Solaris back in the day), and have done for years, but I've never actually read or even seen the original Unix printed documentation. I've half a mind to keep an eye out for printed copies, as I suspect I'd probably learn something, even now, from reading them.

Oh, and BRW, "man 9 intro" provides a nice intro summery to the kernel internals on NetBSD 🙂

My linoleum top metal desk was the one thing I wanted to steal from the school district when I left. Great video, have an awesome week.

Ok, ive watched this twice now and its interesting to me that youre saying its good to learn today, from the beginning like we all did in that era. I’ve told people that but they think the task is just to big.

Also of note the absence of documentation today like this. Where I have to constantly find half answers and myths about how things work in a countless number of forums. All of which are dominated by arrogant, well, kids, pretty much, who wont help you if you dont bow to them.

In the 80s I was doing VAX/VMS. We had the “Big Orange Wall.” This was later replaced with the “Big Gray Wall.”

I used to have a bound copy just like those, but they got lost in a move years ago, boo 😞 I still have my copy of Bach, though, and while not The Manual, still a super good resource!

Has the devil guy always been part of BSD? I think someplace i have a book that had all of these topics compiled into one book, a very thick paper back and the pages were so thin they were easy to rip.
