I forgot to mention vanilla os is another great immutable distro!

Its also made and maintained by the same people who maintain bottles!

M8 great video and I agree that this would be the most logical step to get Linux in the hands of windows users

Yeah great points in this video, I think one of the blessings of Tumbleweed is having snapper out of the box similar to the backup image like you mentioned. The question is that at large if immutable distros are sold with laptops on the market for example, say at a local electronics store (i.e. Best Buy here in the US), WHICH distros get prioritized and how they would be marketed would be interesting to see. MacOS is MacOS, Windows 11 is Windows 11. How would these manufacturers explain the difference between Kinoite and Bazzite among all the others when the average Karen is lucky if they even know what "Linux" itself is? haha

I been using Bluefin from universal blue project to, based on Fedora Silverblue. Until now is the most stable experience I have on Linux, very cool project. I really think that for the normal user atomic is the way to go.

I think more and more about immutable distro.
My distro almost never changes except for update and I use docker images depending on what I code.

I've jumped ship to Linux from Windows quite a few times. I would always go back to windows because I'd end up breaking something while trying to figure out all the terminal commands to install gaming drivers and what not. This time I went with Bazzite and so far everything just works (unless its a game with a shitty anti-cheat) and doesn't break easy. Its my longest go at trying Linux again.

I'm happy using Bazzite KDE version. With Nvidia being fixed in Wayland, I can definitely say, that Linux has stepped on the brightest path it has ever been. Smooth, stable, simple. And even immutable distro is much more flexible than windows nowadays :D

I found fedora kinoite and bazzite to be stable and def prefer this over writable distris. Usually i end up breaking writable distros over time of changing things. Insync doesnt work as a flatpak tho so i did need a guide to install it into a container. But now that it is im happy

it's bazzite distro that made consider the idea of pc in place where game console would normally be
as it's really feels shitty to play console nowadays when you can have limitless of pc, and comfort of console together (after the set up)

like after the day i got decky loader working in steam big picture, in garuda kde; as well with the steam ROM manager
i kept seeing my young brother opening old ps2 games and asking what they are about
even going through trying them out; some he reached a bit far i think (tom and jerry in ps2; kinda has a progression of opening characters; and midnight club 3; as well few nfs games)
some ps2 GTA's, tekken 5, max payne, family guy and crash bandicoot are some of what he played

at least he doesn't even open up fortnight anymore (and i am glad he doesn't)(i don't need another brother life sucked by another life service game, lol did damage to people i know enough)

For the average user who is already using Linux they will never like a Immutable distro. They are too limited to what they can do. For someone who doesnt know Linux and just needs a computer to boot and do what they want and not play around, configure, etc. it will work. I have tried most of them and since I want certain things installed in the base, like duf, lsd, fastfetch, HIP drivers for my AMD card, they dont work or you have to install them a special way that could be replaced with an update and have to re-install it all again. Not worth it. The longest one I had on my machine was HoloOS (the SteamDeck os) and it was great for gaming, but lots of round about ways to get other system things installed.

For that reason alone I could never suggest a Immutable to anyone, even a beginner. Once they learn and want to tinker it will be harder to do.

Did anyone notice that the mint website, to access the checksum and gpg... the browsers launch it with Warning? Expired certificate and more? I saw it on September 21, 2024..

Might be interesting to do a comparison video between Bazzite, Chimarea, HoloISO, Playtron, Nobara, and any other OS that provides a Steam Machine configured install. I'm slowly getting the parts to build a 2nd rig to have hooked up to my TV for couch gaming while my main rig currently runs CachyOS. You do have me considering Bazzite again for it. Was thinking about using the Nobara configured install for a Steam Machine

we need a proper Arch based Immutable desktop distro

ok, I wanted to install the utility to change my monitor's brightness in gnome. It needs a package and change of permissions. Can't be installed on an immutable distro. On literally any other distro, it takes 15 seconds to set up

The only thing that prevents me from diving into an immutable distro completely is CloudFlare WARP.

Do you think its is better to use bazzite over cachy os ? Also which is better in terms of gaming performance kde or gnome ?

my only complaint about everything you said in this video... us linux users aren't normal users! we're powerusers thats why we chose linux!

I feel like if normies will collectively use immutable distros they might take over normal distros turning desktop Linux into Android🤮. Yk more demand for stuff for immutable distros might lessen amount of stuff for regular distros.
Maybe not, maybe it doesn't matter, maybe Im insane

I still dont get it. If you are a "normal" user who wont touch anything anyway whats the point of having immutable? Just because its kinda a bit more secure and snaps out of the box? Even normie users sometimes need to change something under the hood for their specific use case and normal distros are for that - you can safely use them without touching anything and you try to actually change something only when you need to. I feel like "immutable distros are the future" is the narrarive which corps love to push because they want to control their system without us users tinkering with it and thats it. They want to make normal distros obscure for their own interests
