G85 or GH5? Features & Value Comparison

My comparison of the G85 and GH5 in terms of features AND in terms of what you could buy with the price difference between the two bodies. I hope this helps those who may be on the fence deciding between these two fantastic cameras.

I'm a documentary film-maker in Australia. The GH5 is $3, 800 with the 12-60mm lens. Way to much! So I bought the G85 with 12-60mm lens; a Zhiyun Crane gimble and finally a DJI Mavic Pro drone for the same price! There was no decision. It was obvious.

Great info. How happy are you with the autofocus? For my situation (youtuber) I've come to accept the fact that for me that's probably the most important feature and it's why I end up using the 80D more even though my gh4 is a much more capable camera.

Would you recommend buying GH5 over G80 for paid work like basic music videos and some events and short films etc?
If G80 is good then I would rather prefer to invest in quality glass instead of GH5 but who ever I have discussed with, all are suggesting to get a GH5 over G80. Here in the UK one can buy 2 and a half G80's for the price of one GH5 and more than 3 G80's instead of 1 GH5S.
Also if its GH5 then would you still buy it over GH5S?

Good video and good timing for me to view this. I am in the back n forth review of these two cameras. I am sort of a nube, BUT, I have a burning desire to explore making videos, especially short documentary... and I want a high quality MFT for stills as I think I take good photos with my iPhone/compact PandShoot. Also, I have very high ambitions :). and aptitude for learning also I want to future proof my purchase. GH5 w/12-35mm $3050 - G85 w/14-42mm $1050. I'm retired, I have the money AND the time ...I actually NEED something like editing to pass some time while enjoying a beer, possibly even to justify buying a new iMac to do it with. Even if, it ends up not being my "thing" and I sell it, I will have had fun doing this. In this review, one thing you didn't mention. GH5, in video mode, can crop in an additional 1.4x in 4K and 2.7x in HD. Very cool feature. It appears to me, that there is nothing the G85 does that the GH5 can't. SOOO, IF you were me, what would you buy? GH5 or G85? And why? PLEASE, help me. I am the most indecisive person you will ever know. Be kind in your replies and lets bounce some thoughts and ideas.

When using an external recorder, I would like to know if the camera screen and the recorder screen both display what is being filmed.
I'm asking because the screen goes blank on G7 once the record button is pressed.

Nice point of view! Same amount of money and you can get more! We want to buy a new vlogging camera and we don't know if buy Sony a6500, Lumix g85 or Lumix gh5. G85 is pretty amazing but the bitrate is really low, about 25mb. Is it makes a different in terms of image quality? We use a Sony a5100 and we are happy with the IQ but no external mic and poor battery life. Probably the a6500 has a poor battery life too and no flip screen. Maybe g85 is the solution!

Minor error. At 1:46, the GH5 cannot do 10-bit 4:2:2 internal recording at 60fps. Its only 10-bit at 24 and 30p at UHD resolutions and at 24p for 4k DCI when recording internally. For 60fps you can only record 8-bit internally, or 10-bit externally over HDMI (with something like an Atomos Inferno).

How about the picture quality between g85 and gh5? How about low light performance? To me these are the two factors that really count the most.

Definitely!If you are on the budget but still can afford GH5 and do not have time/will to do extra post production why to buy it?You should go for G80 and some additional lenses as you have mentioned.

I have lenses, 12-35 f2.8... 42.5 f1.7... 25mm f1.7 wich I use on my g7... I also have lights, microphones...

The gh5 looks so good that makes me wanna spend the money on it! I could also sell my canon 6D with the 85mm 1.8 but that's my main photography camera I don't know what to do :/

Good Day! I have a question. Why when I import the files to Premiere it
says that the frame rate is 23.976 jst like it was with dslrs, I thought
it shot 24. Anyone else has this Problem?

The G85 is great, and the video quality is more than good enough for most people. It's excellent. I do have a few quibbles with it though.
1) There's a crop in UHD. It's not awful, but it's noticeable.
2) Moiré can sneak in since there's no AA filter, so watch for that.
3) The autofocus is terrible in video. Just don't even try to use video AF on a G85. I know the GH5 autofocus is not great, but this is considerably worse.
4) No DCI 4K. I've come to really like that on my E-M1 Mark II.

I shoot video professionally but I went with the G85. Why? Because I'm more kind of video-reporter than an artist. I need a crispy sharp and steady shot, not that much postproduction. My Setup is a GH5 + Viltrox Speetbooster + Sigma 18-35 1.8 in combination with a Zoom H5 for sound. I rarly use slowmotion and never had the need of V-LOG. A friend of mine des have the GH5, he needed the slow motion feature and thought V-LOG would be great. he used V-LOG the first 2 weeks and after that he used normal pictureprofiles, because it's not THAT much difference. So the first question you should ask yourself is "do I need this feature?". Some features are nice to have, but really unnecessary to you.

I'm buying 2 g85s with kit lenses and 2 2 to 14mm lenses. This will cut my work flow time in half with 2 4K time lapses being captured at the same time.
