HIVI! - Dari Mata Ke Hati | Sounds From The Corner Session #5

"There’s one thing I want to admit: During my gig as a radio announcer, there were days when I had to play HiVi!’s “Siapkah Kau 'Tuk Jatuh Cinta Lagi” multiple times a day, not including when the song came on requests. It pissed me off to no end.
I wasn’t sure if it’s the repetitiveness, the ear-piercing high-pitched vocals, or the cheesy title. I mean, why would anyone shorten untuk to ‘tuk? With an apostrophe, no less? It sounds more like a diary entry of a lovestruck teenager in the 90’s than an appropriate title for a chart-topping 2015 pop song to me.
But hey, that’s just me. Maybe I’m not exactly the kind of audience that they’re targeting, and it’s okay. This is purely an it’s-not-you-it’s-me-moment since they’re so successful everywhere else!
If there’s one thing that I’ve always admired from most pop acts, it’s their down-to-earth realities. HiVi!, for example, managed to pull off a song like “Lihatlah Dunia”, in which the lyrics are highly motivational and positive and even bordering towards pep talk material. The second track in this video, “Mata Ke Hati”, reeks of adolescence and exaggerated emotion steeped in cliches:
“Tak pernah kurasakan cinta
Begitu hebatnya
Sebelum kukenal kamu.”
But hear me out, isn’t that what you exactly want to hear when you’re a lovestruck teenager?
HiVi!’s charming, sweet, and positive image fit the mold of what successful pop acts exuded. Just take a peek down the comment section and see fans throwing heart emojis to individual members of the band. There’s no need to bring up pretentious lines and subjects when you want to speak for the heart. As a teenage girl rapidly aging out of pop music’s key demographic, who am I to judge? - Zara Z.
