When you start falling asleep half way through and think scientist use emojis to make mice kill

We use them to substitute the lack of sight of our face. We want to portray emotion which does affect the meaning of our words. That's it.
People that overuse emotes are simply not accustomed to online communication, so they appear obnoxious, random or just hard to understand in general. Emotes are a language. But I doubt there's enough space for a whole science.

If people keep using pictures to communicate, eventually they'll become more abstracted until they represent individual sounds.

Before I even get too far into this video I'd like to say that I love the way you guys ask questions and then form your videos around those questions. Science is all about questioning everything and then going through the journey of finding the answer!

I'm glad they are studying the psychology of emojis. I know one emoji who could really benefit from some psychological help. She's crazy...

Could you please do an episode on cerebral aneurysms? I had one rupture when I was 19 and I would love for people to learn more about them!

I'm looking forward to all the bad movies and TV crime show episodes based on that mouse research.

I remember when there were just emoticons. Great way to clarify emotional content of a text-only online message. Emails/texts from older folks tend to sound very stern, or even angry, due to the formal structure and lack of emotional context.

The activated mice attacked sticks and bottlecaps. So, they turned the mice into cats?

There was a fantastic paper a year or two back that talked about the emotional impact of the way emojis appear on different platform - Apple vs Android vs Facebook, etc. Since the emojis vary from platform to platform, the writer hypothesized the difference in communciation when using emojis. Fascinating stuff!
