This is also why Italians LOVE Brazilian players because they weren't afraid to attack when they played in Serie A.

Italian defenders are world class. Defending is in their blood

I love the way that even a flair attacker like Del Piero talks about the importance of defence.
That’s the mentality of Italian football - defence comes first, then build the rest on top.
It’s much easier to win 1-0 than win 4-3.
It all comes down to winning.

If I’m not mistaken, almost every player on that 2006 World Cup winning Italian squad played for Seria A club at that time.

Defense is always seen as the boring part of the game but that 2006 Italian squad was so amazing in defense that I started to appreciate defense strategies.

Tackles like this would probably end the careers of the current players

Now wonder why the Seria A was peaked between the 80s-00s. Those Top games weren’t to joke about. Maldini, Nesta, Baresi, Costacurta, Cannavaro, Chiellini, Bonnuci etc were great.

I miss those days when Seria A was THE league of the football world.

Attackers: you may fail dozens of goals, but just score one and you became a hero
Defenders: just one mistake and you failed

I remember watched MU vs Milan in 200's when 19years old cristiano ronaldo play against 35years old paolo maldini. Ronaldo did not have a chance to dribble for 90minutes. This is how maginificent italian defender was

I remember that defence and counter attack against Germany in WC 2006. I don't know why people call defensive football as boring. For me seeing Maldini slide in slow motion is more artistic than forwards or midfielders scoring or passing.

For all its good points, Serie A's brutal defending in the 80s also caused the premature demise of Marco Van Basten's playing career.

Every country back then have their own character/style of play.
Thats why makes football so fun to watch, the passion too

During the 90s Italian football was the best. They had the best defenders/ midfielders and some of the best forwards and I can remember watching Zidane playing for Juventus and Nedved on Saturdays. Back then the game was different as there was gladiators on the pitch oh how I miss those times. 🥹

Our problem today are strikers and forwards not defenders. In the 90's we have Baggio, Vialli, Zola, Chiesa, Signori in the 2000s we have Vieri, Inzaghi, Del Piero, Totti and so on...now Scamacca and Retegui and mediocres like that.

Legend. The Italians in the 90s were unbelievable. Some serious players

One thing I disagree with is that Italians aren't good at defending anymore because they can't "play that way anymore" when the main icons are Maldini and Baresi, who never played with the so-called "dark arts" of defending. They played clean and honest. Even Cannavaro rarely crossed that line.
