Y'know... the revelation here shouldn't be that Berdly has a backstory, therefore we should like him now. The revelation is that Berdly didn't get to where he is because of sheer ability, he got to where he is because he works HARD. He's not as gifted as Noelle, but he still tries his hardest to stay at the top of the class despite that, and I think that motivation, that *determination, * is somewhat admirable.

That moment when Noelle couldn't spell December because it's her sister's name (Dessy=December)

When the most hated character has a tragic backstory:

Berdly is the “do you know who I am???… cause I don’t” kind of character,
His backstory doesn’t excuse his douchy behaviour per say but it puts it in a perspective

I like how he doesn't change his behavior after the arc. Yeah, he stops pretending to be the smartest, but he pretends to be really dumb instead, because he thought that everyone wanted him to be dumb. It's not a sudden change and it will actually take him a long time to develop healthy habits, and that's what I like about his character. He has genuine problems and bad coping mechanisns, and we can see how it is for him instead of him suddenly getting better or something.

The saddest thing is what ISN'T told in his backstory. No child raised in a healthy home would be so overtaken by the attention from winning a spelling bee, and, considering the theory that the queen is a representation of the behaviour of the lightner's mothers, which fits well for the others, we can assume he probably has a negligent mother, which we can see in the way queen avoids and ignores him, making him cling to the single trait that interests her, being smart, just like he does IN THE LIGHT WORLD

After what happened with SNOWGRAVE... This hits different

He honestly reminds me alot of Papyrus. With the whole delusions of grandeur thing. He's alot more mean about it, but I dunno. I came around to him (plus, he's like what, 14-15???). Especially after remembering that one line Ralsei had made in the acid river ride. "Susie is rude, selfish, and sarcastic. But isn't it great that she's her?" I like chicken nugget man, no I LOVE chicken nugget man. I was very sad when I turned him into cold chicken nugget man in the Snowgrave route. It hits harder after the Snowgrave route, that's for sure.

When i saw his backstory about how he winning a spelling bee, made him throughout the years be looked as superior, a prodigy, if you will, even tho he actually wasn't... made me realize... now, he got a "burden" of not just wanting, but NEEDING to be superior, needing to show his 100% at every exam, at every class... since... if he isn't the best anymore... who will he be...? "Just a forgettable bluebird."

Ah, yes. That moment when Susie broke Berdly's psyche-locks.

The song of “fuck, now I HAVE to empathize with him, we’re both ‘fake’ gifted kids!”

This would make a good Ace Attorney Reminiscence song

This is actually a pretty touching backstory. It's even sadder when you think about what happens in the genocide route as well

This track has a depressing and empty feel to it. In fact, it almost made me cry. It fits Berdly’s mindset about him thinking that if he fails, people will stop caring about him, thinking that he’s just “a forgettable bluebird”. That scene made me want to give him a hug because, despite his success, he has to pressure himself to live up to what everyone sees him as, an intelligent, straight A student. He knows deep down that he has less potential than Noelle, and that he’s only successful because of her, and that’s what bothers him. It’s not the fact that he’s successful, it’s the pressure behind all of that success, the mindset that if he fails, he won’t be anything great. Yeah, Berdly wasn’t the nicest guy throughout the first and most of the second chapter, but maybe his inner struggle could be the reason why. Though on the bright side, he’s very hard working, cares deeply about Noelle, and later shows that he’s willing to do the right thing and fix his mistakes. Honestly, I didn’t really hate him from the start (Because of his iconic smug face), but I didn’t like him too much either. Now I like him a little more, because I felt bad for him and he had a good character arc.

Honestly Berdly's backstory really shows how hard it is for a child to live up to high expectations and how devastatingly crushing it is when you KNOW you can't reach them.

I didn't know people hated him
I like his personality

Don't understand why people hate him. I love when characters get actual humane traits, it makes the game feel way more genuine. Also, NOBODY deserves what happened to him in the weird route.

I honestly never knew people hated him. Sure, he was annoying, but personally that wasn't enough for me to hate him.

Though he did annoy me enough to make me call him "Bird Brain".

In just a single cutscene, Toby is able to turn one of the most annoying, hateable characters in the game into a sympathetic, yet still flawed party member, while also providing a unique spin on the “gifted kid” archetype. It’s a perfect example of Undertale’s message: everyone, no matter how bad they may seem, has a story of their own to tell.
