Elliot Gould and Barbra Streisand met in 1961 during auditions for "I Can Get It For You Wholesale", a Broadway musical. Gould was eventually cast as the play's lead, but Barbra was less experienced on stage at the time. For Gould, it was love at first sight, and they were married shortly after, beginning a love affair that's been described as "iconic."

But after only six years, the couple separated. Gould has been pretty open about the circumstances that lead to their eventual divorce, even though Streisand refuses to talk about it much, leaving half of the story open to rumors and speculation. Here's why Barbra Streisand and Elliot Gould divorced.

I remember Gould in harlequin costume in the 60s, singing and dancing on a tv show of some kind. He was marvelous !!

I remember a Life magazine spread on them and pictures of their "eccentric" bohemian apartment.

Did anybody notice the blurb on his TCM Biography? 🤣🤣🤣 Gould still trying to console his ego. "Barbra's Larger than Life Legacy" is pretty difficult to topple and compete. 🤪 Why can't he just say, I WAS happy to be a part of Barbra's life, honor to be 1st husband, and we have a son together? Too ugly now to be floating his Ego.

She's obviously more talented than him, hence a national treasure and a living legend and he's not. He clearly wasn't man enough to support his successful wife. He should count himself lucky to have been married to her.

The actual reason Gould and Streisand divorced was due to Streisand's having had issues genuinely connecting to others. She could not "bond." Nothing sensational, just unfortunate. It's a psychological condition where a person pretends love, but is unable to trust. She spoke about it to Mike Rather in a 1991 interview, in which she also stated she would never sing "People, " her signature song, the same way. Rather inquired why she said that and she replied she could no longer sing the phrase "People, people who NEED people." She could now sing it only as "People, people who LOVE people...are the luckiest people in the world." She knew she couldn't bond (she also said that she'd been in therapy for more 30 years (learning how to care) ) and when Rather asked why it took her so long to understand (the mechanics of caring and loving), she said, "I'm a slow learner!!!"

Gould, for his part, was a somewhat depressed man (evident in his demeanor both on and offstage), and it is very hard for depressed people to love others: they are, unfortunately, highly self-absorbed. And it just happened that they were not compatible matches. And it is unfortunate that some people repeat the same mistake over and over and over. Streisand did not! She stayed single until she was healthy enough to recognize someone good for her and that is her current husband, James Brolin. Time seems to have helped them both.
