That last line gets me... Like it could be him asking his mom if she's happy he made it
But it could be him telling his mom and she's asks him if he's happy and he has no answer
Dude this guy needs to stop he's so good...at this shit

“I’m not happy. But I’m happier after experiencing you.”

The fact that this song is kind of a resemblance of the end of Bo’s career and it leaves on a note of “I did all I did to try to make people happy, and now that the show is done, it’s time for me to be happy myself” because Bo hasn’t been seen since his show “Make Happy”

what gets me every time is bo asking "on a scale from one to zero, are you happy?" in the first chorus. to him, happiness isn't a sliding scale, it's binary. you're either satisfied, or you aren't. and once you do reach 'one', if you ever do, the question changes to "on a scale from one to two now, are you happy?"

for most people, they never just _get_ to be happy. it's never that easy. the scale's always moving up, the goalposts always move farther down the field. and it's really tiring. this song, man, goddamn.

"oh god, my dad was right" is the line that always hits the hardest for me. we don't know what his dad was right about, but the ambiguity makes it relatable to so many. it just makes me think about my dad. it hurts

I think this is the song that came closest to being personal, and revealing actual information about Bo. A lot of his other sad songs criticise general themes in society, but the fact that he mentions his parents in this one, and there’s no punchline, it feels like he really did have issues with his parents and this song kinda half reveals that. But I think that’s intentional, he always said he didn’t want a close, cloying relationship with his fans, so it makes sense that he’d leave on this song, it’s like he got to indulge in a little bit of honest songwriting before he never did it again.

I used to think this song was one of his saddest songs, then I watched his new special. Now I come back here to get cheered up.

"the last taboo in comedy is a man doing something sincerely and well" Good luck to Bo even if it means that we as an audience will no longer see him.

"You're everything you hated, are you happy? Hey Ma look, I made it! Are you happy?" Those two lines gives me a sad visual. Imagine, youre sloshing through life, trying to do everything you can. And at the end of your journey your realize, I became everything i hated... But It was to help my family, to make them happy, to help them survive... Now imagine after that seeing your mother, you looking like you had just been stabbed it the gut, keeled over, you look up at you mom. "Hey Ma, look I made it, are you happy?" I took it more as "Hey Ma, look I made it, Are you proud?"

The bit where he says "On a scale from one to zero" and then he calls back to it by saying "On a scale from one to two now" makes me feel things.

That makes me feel a bit better.

Because the scales get to me
Sometimes depression traps you to a point where you can't reach anything above 5.

You're stuck at 1-0 (there's no one point ahead or a point behind.)
Utter emptiness. But, fighting it and saving yourself, you'll see change
The only 1 changes to 1-2

Which makes me believe it'll keep going until its 10, and you have the ability to feel, just like everyone else

I've been listening to this song more than I used to. I have a crippling anxiety disorder, and I'm also the therapist friend. I don't remember the last time I was genuinely happy, and I relate to this song quite a lot. It's good to hear that there's someone who knows what it's like to feel like that. I've never been genuinely asked if I was okay. Thank you Bo Burnham.
