Noah Baumbach’s latest ― featuring Adam Driver, Greta Gerwig, and Don Cheadle ― dramatizes an American family’s attempts to deal with the mundane conflicts of everyday life during a catastrophic event.

Based on the book by Don DeLillo and written for the screen and directed by Noah Baumbach, White Noise tells the story of a blended family in near-domestic bliss caught in the throes of a near-apocalypse.

College professor Jack Gladney (Adam Driver) and his wife Babette (Greta Gerwig) are each other’s fourth marriage and are parents to four children, who are all experiencing growing pains but are generally happy. After a railway tank car accident outside of town causes what the government deems an “Airborne Toxic Event,” the family must navigate an evacuation order and the dangers outside in order to survive.

With costumes by award-winning designer Ann Roth and dynamic music from Danny Elfman, Baumbach’s latest thrums with ’80s materialism and paranoia. At once hilarious and horrifying, ordinary and apocalyptic, White Noise is disaster drama–meets–National Lampoon’s Vacation.
