for those who don't know much about bugs: this is dynastes tityus, the eastern hercules beetle! the common name 'hercules beetle' actually refers to a different species within the same genus, dynastes hercules. this specimen is in the video, which is easy to discern thanks to the horns present on its head. females have flat and often darker heads. (the same is true for other rhino beetles, as the horns are used by the males to settle disputes, thus the females have no use for them.)
eastern hercules beetles are native to the eastern united states, as the name might imply. like the caption says they are on the larger side of beetles, especially for the area they live in; species like megasoma elephas (elephant beetle) can compete with them, though.
they live for around 18-20 months in total when they are wild, although that can, of course, vary. a year of this is spent as a grub feeding on decaying woods. they will then pupate, and spend a couple months as a pupa before emerging as full adults, a state in which they will live for 4 or 5 months, feeding on sap and decaying fruit.

this is a very handsome specimen! i hope to see one sometime soon (can you tell this is my favorite species. lol)
