Spain allowed women on stage in both religious and secular plays. Rumor had it that a English noblewoman was offended by men playing female roles and complained, thus sparking reform throughout England’s stages.

Fun fact: part of the comedy in one of Shakespeare's plays is that there are men dressing up as women who are pretending to be men

Interesting historical fact about how women became actors:

It was King Charles the II who removed the ban on women acting on stage in England. He had been raised in exile in France where it was accepted that there were female actors on stage.

When he returned to England & reinstated the theatres. He disliked the performances of the men playing the women's roles. & so decreed that it was no longer illegal for women to be actresses.

& women flocked to the new roles in droves. That's how the King meet Nell Gwyn she was a former orange seller. Who had become an actress & eventually King Charles favourite mistress. 🍊🎬💋

The audience is literally me when I watch bearded comedy sketch YouTubers who put towels on their head when they're playing female characters.

Women characters in the Elizabethan Era were played by young boys in tall shoes because their voices were higher pitched for the role. There was also very little kissing in Shakespeare’s plays. It was mostly verbal affection.

Colin went on to be so convincing that the King believed he was actually a woman and had both him and Shakespeare executed

Honestly for folks who haven’t seen some of Shakespeare’s plays, my gosh was he progressive. So much so it’s rumored he just published plays written by Queen Elizabeth!

I mean in Midsummer nights Dream, the dukes wife is an Amazonian warrior queen that he did battle with and only managed to earn her effecting when he managed to beat her,

Twelfth Night a woman disguised as a man is the lead roll and plays the part of a man so well no one manages to catch it,

And Much Ado about Nothing has this AMAZING speech given by Beatrice where she speaks on if only she where a man she’d challenge Claudio in Hero’s honor, not to mention the quips are fire,

And on topics of race as well while for a while people placed merchant of Venice as a comedy it’s in truth a tragedy where the ‘villain’ has the most amazing depth where he explains his hate and anger to be caused by how he’s mistreated because of his race.

‘If you prick me, do I not bleed? If you tickle me, do I not laugh?”

Sorry for the rant, Shakespeare or whoever wrote the plays, honestly amazing work.

Fun Fact: While all female roles were played by men, younger women (like Juliet) would be played by young boys, and as they grew up they learned how to "behave like a woman" and would then play older women (like queens and such) once they got older.

Other other fun fact: This is likely where the term Drag Queen is from!

They said the King isn’t allowing women but actually it was Queen Elizabeth I who was Queen at the time and enjoyed watching the plays
