Sticking finger into Sea Anemone

Показать описание
This was taken at a tide pool out in the Laguna Beach area in California. You'll notice that the sea anemone brings it's tentacles in and starts to stick to me. In reality, this is the sea anemone trying to sting me. Luckily human skin is thick enough so that the venomous stings do not affect me. Perhaps if I stuck my tongue in there it would be a different story.

Imagine being a small fish and the last thing you see are all these tentacles closing in on you

Aren't they wonderful? I spent my young childhood fascinated with these creatures in tide pools. Now that I am old, I want to go back to the Pacific again.

This actually harms anemones. They close in an attempt to defend themselves or to eat. Their tentacles distribute poison but our skin is too thick to be affected, so it just feels like they are sticking to us. They do not have the ability to regenerate immediately after such a poke, so if they're hungry or in need of defense, they can't do anything because somebody decided they needed to poke them. So please don't hurt the anemones by doing this in the future.

The amount of sympathy for that anemone down here is making me lonely.

Who watches this or even comes across this without first looking up some info about sea anemomes..? They curl themselves in once they grab hold of something to feed on its prey, it wasn't in distress, it just thought it was lunch time.

I wish everyone got mad when someone poked me.

I remember asking an aquarium tour guide if I could do that when I was little and they told me that’s where it defecates or something. Don’t think I’d still try that in the present.

The center is its mouth and where it releases its eggs from. They are very sensitive there. I know they seem to be resilient animals but plz never touch/poke them in the center/mouth. Not only could this hurt them but it could kill them

Your video was recommended alongside my video, and it turns out they were filmed at the same location! Must be a great spot for sea anemones.

On some anemone species, the sting can penetrate the skin and the venom is deadly.
