Francisco Franco disrupted the legitimacy of the Spanish royal line by declaring Spain a monarchy without a king, leaving the throne vacant after the Spanish Civil War. He bypassed the traditional heir, Don Juan, in favor of his son, Juan Carlos, whom he groomed to uphold his vision of the regime. Despite this interference, Juan Carlos I ultimately played a pivotal role in Spain's transition to democracy after Franco's death in 1975, helping to restore the monarchy's legitimacy.
