Thanks for stopping by to watch this very un-sexy topic on yarn substitution 😋I know it's not terribly exciting, but along with swatching, it's one of THE most important exercises you can do to ensure successful projects. And as I always say, successful projects make happy knitters (and crocheters!) 😀

I think I become addicted to your channel. You are just so good. Your episode on yarn substitution is pure gold! Yes, intuitively, I have done all those things you list, made all the same considerations, enjoyed the math involved (yes, I’m a geek)….But to have someone present all this in a coherent, informative and entertaining way is just so satisfying. And many thanks for the hint with the yarn sub website. Been there already and found what I was after so easily. Along with having found a new online shop with lots of brands on offer just made my day! 😊🙏😎
Oh, almost forgot - the blue you are wearing is your colour!!!!

Your Tip Jar videos are fast becoming my new favourite addiction on YT. Even when I learn nothing new as this one, the way you explain and discribe things is fab. Now to knit more xmas gifts while I wait in anticipation of the next tip jar video!

I'm catching up on your old videos and enjoying them very much. I'm swatching while watching and feeling good about that. I don't mind swatching at all, really. I look at it a a fun little mini project that I can knock out quickly and I really love seeing how the yarn works up. Sending love your way! --Anne

This was super helpful to understand all the considerations when substituting!! Thank you! Your previous videos have also been very helpful to me as an intermediate knitter.

I have been knitting for years. I just realized that I don't even LOOK at what yarn is used in the pattern. 😮. I am rarely wanting anything to look exactly like the pattern. But this video has been a revelation. So much more to yarn than I ever thought about before. Thanks!

Thank you for the information! I am a beginner crocheter (I don't knit). However, several of your 'tips' certainty apply to crocheting. You have saved me a lot of pain in my new hobby!

This is probably the best explanation for yarn substitutions that I’ve seen. I’m a crocheter/tunisianer and this applies to me. Wish I had seen this awhile ago, before some projects I made. Thanks for the info!

Excellent suggestions, i run into the problem when knitting with Isabell Kraemers pattern she is a German designer, and I can not get those yarns shipped to California, or they charge more for shipping then the yarn is worth, the other is when I knit a pattern from Andrea Mowry her yarns are just to insanely expensive, but she does list a lot more yarn substitutions that are more affordable, I found the website yarn sub very helpful as well, if a yarn is no longer available,

That green gristy sweater looks like it would be a lovely swacket! Maybe if you lived in Michigan in the winter it would be just right.😏

I found the yarn sub site a few years ago when I was making stuffed animals for my grandkids. I found a pattern for a fuzzy little dog pattern, but the yarn was discontinued. I purchased a yarn I THOUGHT would work and it was a disaster. I then emailed the pattern maker (from England) and she couldn't be nicer. She explained to me that the yarn I bought was a different weight and yards than the pattern called for. Then she gave me a pattern of hers that would work for that yarn. I then purchased the correct yarn for fuzzy dog and made it. 😁
