Having spent too many (but no where near enough) hours studying and practicing jazz piano in the past -- and recently given up out of frustration -- I at least got the chance to see just how extremely difficult it is not just to put together an arrangement that is as smooth and classy as this, but also to play and sing it well. Sangah makes it all seem so effortless, doesn't she? Not only is this video outstanding, but if you check out her other bossa nova renditions of the Jobim/Astrud Gilberto big hits, they also match in quality. Elegant fills, no excessive Liberace-like flourishes, excellent chord voicings, gentle dynamics and tempo, well-chosen progressions, and a voice that certainly works with this music... gosh, this lady has it all. Not even a bass or drum to back it up. If you compare her to other YouTube jazz pianists and listen closely, you will see that this is actually at a whole other level. The crazy thing is, I suspect that she will be taking gigs playing background music at some restaurant or hotel somewhere, and people will be babbling away at their tables a with no idea of the extraordinary talent that is pushing out that music. You have to really love what you are doing to get to this level and it shows here. It is great that she posts her stuff on YouTube. So many people in America are in communities that simply don't have venues that have talent like this and will only experience it on some old movies, if even that. Even in the big cities, it is hard to find people at her level and I know that rarely will the managers of those venues have any understanding just how exceptional it is. And for young people who want to take up jazz, it is incredibly valuable to see what a real pro jazz pianist sounds like. Yes folks, here it is: the real deal.
