I’ve heard this take multiple times over the years, but no one has ever offered a shred of proof to back it up.

I have been there. Gambling is never about the money. It just looks this way for people that have never been addicted. Gambling even gives you a hangover, just the way heavy drinking does. It fucks up your value system and a lot of aspects of your personal life. It is like a drug that you have to inject to stay mentally even. The worst thing is that you can not rely on a person that is addicted to gambling. There is a way out but you have to make this choice and fight the addiction.

This is bullcrap. no player would be suspended for 18months just because of gambling. Stern already said it. He was the biggest asset of the nba at that time. The impact he does not only for the league but globally.

I don't think the Bulls would have defeated Houston in 1995 even if MJ had not retired prior to the start of the 1993-94 season.
Houston smashed Orlando in a 4-0 sweep in the 1995 NBA Finals.
If MJ had not retired again after the 1998 season, it wouldn't of mattered
There is no way the Bulls would have defeated San Anotonio or the LA Lakers in a best-of-seven series.

Tigers life went down the tubes because of his association with #23 - no doubt something nefarious with his dads death and all of the random car accidents Tiger seems to get into every other year

No idea about Jordan but I know that prior to announcing he had HIV Magic and Isiah Thomas were planning on buying an NBA team and the powers that be did not want former players owning teams so Magic comes down with HIV and a year later Isiah gets left off the Dream Team. Now for those who do not know Isiah was very vocal about social issues and Stern tried to get him to stop and he wouldn't. Also Isiah was VP and President of the players Union he pushed for and got better pay for players better hotels for road games and Detroit was the 1st NBA team to have their own private plane because players used to fly commercial and Isiah helped to change so owners and the league always resented him for that.

With the several point shaving scandals in college basketball in the late 70s through the 80s and into the 90s, and recent conviction of Pete Rose, it's not out of the realm of possibility that the league and Jordan agreed that he needed to step away from the game to let things cool down. MJ could take control of just about any game, so it's possible that he could control a point spread.

I'm not saying this as fact. Those Bulls teams of the 90s were a big part of my growing up, and regardless of whether the gambling thing it true or not, those teams were going to win championships.

And it's just as possible that he just lost passion for the game after his dad was murdered.

His father was at every game. Of course after his father was killed, I knew he was going to quit. Look how he was after the first 2nd threepeat, because his father wasn't three pear, he was bawling on the floor. Don't you think those murderers would've said they were hired?
