Thanks Dan I'm nearly 68, always loved gardening but stepped it up a level to an allotment for the first time a year ago. Not planting anything at the moment, but still reaping my rewards, just home with sprouts, leeks, parsnips, kale and beetroot for tomorrow's roast. I'm trying to get the plot in order for the coming year. Woodchip paths straight on the soil, I've piled up about a ton of not quite "half rotted" horse manure onto a bed and covered it with plastic. I'm eager to find ways to speed up the process. Bit ambitious but I want it ready for spring. My ground is really sandy but easy to dig. I've been watching you improve all year, thanks for sharing, keep it up mate, it all helps. Pat

Hi Dan, I was blown away by the beetroot I harvested after a heavy frost, roasted in the oven it was absolutely delicious and I think it was sweeter and More tender because it had been through that frost!

I’ve missed the boat with much of my winter planting, not so much for want of time management but a lack of time to manage. Managed to sow some Tuscan kale (after my hen Sowenna munched the last lot!) though. I’m very grateful to have been gifted some purple sprouting broccoli 🥦 seedlings late last summer, bought some cheap winter cabbage and Brussels sprout seedlings and by the grace of God a lovely patch of self sown rainbow chard, Sutherland kale 🥬 and returned autumn garlic 🧄 from a failed harvest last year. Hopefully winter hunger gap has been evaded after all! Some great ideas here though for next season, all being smoother sailing ⛵️

Good for you as during winter I leave my allotment till around march, I clear it out and leave it tidy after harvest, too cold and damp for me

Thanks Dan. I have been sowing along with you in my first year. Thank you for putting out your videos I am really appreciating your advice. I thought it all stopped at the end of the summer.... I had no idea we can keep going so thank you so much. Always look forward to what you have to say.

That was a surprise to see you upload a Winter planting video. Hope you are keeping well and ready for the festivities. I have never done the overwintering crops here, I dread to think what they would have to endure, it is great if you are able to get some early crops away. I aim to start a lot of seeds off earlier this year. I am thinking of tomatoes and cucumber. I had cucumbers on the vine through November and have successfully frozen a good amount, so I have been pleased with that - normally you are faced with a glut, but I froze lots earlier in the season this year. I aim to not buy any henceforth and it is working so far. This year I am concentrating on canning staples: celery, tomatoes, onions, peppers. I only grow chillies every few years as they last so well in the freezer. Is your store of squash and potato/ roots holding well? (or have you eaten it all?) All the best, Vox.

Thanks for sharing. It is amazing that you can still plant out lettuces outside in December. I sowed lettuce seeds directly in a raised bed in October. They do not grow much probably due to low temperature and reduced daylight. Would it be good to cover them with fleece to prevent frost damage during the winter?
