Musk says it's much more efficient to have the battery be part of the architecture of the car, gee why is this? The answer is because by trying to achieve a certain range you need at least a 100 KWH battery pack, which weighs 1, 400 lbs. The battery weighs so much, much of the capacity is consumed just to haul the battery itself. This is a major flaw with EVs, and it doesn't look as though improvements are coming anytime soon.
