Where is cybercrime really coming from? | Caleb Barlow

Cybercrime netted a whopping $450 billion in profits last year, with 2 billion records lost or stolen worldwide. Security expert Caleb Barlow calls out the insufficiency of our current strategies to protect our data. His solution? We need to respond to cybercrime with the same collective effort as we apply to a health care crisis, sharing timely information on who is infected and how the disease is spreading. If we're not sharing, he says, then we're part of the problem.

TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). Look for talks on Technology, Entertainment and Design -- plus science, business, global issues, the arts and much more.

With videos like these, I'm really grateful for YouTube's speed up function. The guy makes some compelling and valid points, but his information density is bearable only at 1.5x and becomes comfortable at 2x speed. I wonder if even higher would be even better ^^

I am convinced this speech was designed for old people when AOL was still a thing.

"How do we stop this?" Definitelly not at a TED talk by talking to bunch of non-computer oriented people...

Most hacking has little to do with computers. It's interpersonal manipulation. Talking to an apathetic secretary, looking up birth certificates, buying legitimate data miner info, faking credentials against those too lazy to check, etc.

My job just got a ransomware today.

What the criminals earn in profits is nothing in comparison to the costs to the victims.

Good luck. Perhaps you could do a follow up on how well this idea is working.

Excuse me, why exactly do we need to stop "cybercrime"?

Every second 10 seconds someone is getting hacked and small businesses who are most vulnerable are getting hit. yahoo doesn't bother me but when you shut down thousands of small businesses you are crippling them.

"Change the economics of this" ? ... How about stop allowing the governments, banks and corporations steal from people, I am sure you would then see huge decrease in cyber crime.
Common people don't think about committing crime and illegal activities as long as their honest work pays off and as long as government and corporations don't steal from them.
That also answers the question "Where is cyber crime really coming from?".

Very suspicious how TED's newest video about Muslim refugee children has disabled both likes and comments. Thought TED was supposed to be about discussing facts, opinions and ideas?

While it's a great idea, it would not be in the vested interest of cyber security firms to do this. So unfortunately it is unlikely to happen at scale enough to be effective. When it becomes too financially painful and regulations are in place, perhaps then.

Give the bad guys bad reviews!? THAT'S (part of) YOUR PLAN!?
