Green Lantern: Emerald Twilight is worse than people remember.

It's Halloween so J dresses up as a Vtuber and complains about Green Lantern. Technically not Halloween related but it's horror to me. I cover it all, Emerald Twilight, the fridge, even the random drunk that dies for no reason. Yeah, Ron Marz' first 10 issues or so were worse than people remember. Anyway, hope you enjoy this admittedly out of left field Halloween special.

It just goes to show that studios have really been doing their characters bad for so long, that all they want is the constant high, not realizing that they slow parts exist to build up or people just stop caring. From the need to shake-up characters with constant death and senseless slaughter for sales, to having every movie be a bigger threat that will kill more people then the last.

I found Alex's inclsuion weirdly mature. I've never seen a hero stay friends with their ex while having said ex be a mentor to them. It sucks that they killed her off so soon. Their dynamic was unique. Also, Happy Halloween.

Emerald Twilight was a big misstep and it's consequences were everywhere. Hal Jordan would be a villain for 2 years and then dead for 8, him being the Spectre doesn't count and the fans still saw him as a villain, and he was only brought back by the mandate of being "iconic" like the Barry Allen Flash despite most readers growing up with Wally West and Kyle Rayner as The Flash and Green Lantern.

I remember Emerald Twilight was made in response to criticisms that The Death of Superman and Knightfall didn’t actually make any changes to the status quo since they were obviously not going to replace Superman with any of the four replacements or Batman with Azrael. So they made Emerald Twilight to permanently shake up the Green Lantern mythos and replace the current main character Hal Jordan with Kyle Rayner.

In that respect, they succeeded, but of course that also completely derailed Hal’s character. Maybe if his fall was handled over a longer course of time, it could’ve been more effective.

My first Green Lantern comic was the final issue of Emerald Twilight. I thought Hal with all of those rings looked cool. So I STARTED with Kyle. I like him. I related to him as a little boy who wanted to draw. I agree about Alex. I think they didn’t want to bring her back later because Carol became a Star Sapphire “lantern”.

Its kinda interesting reading Emerald Twilight with the retcon in mind because its a rare retcon that were so seamlessly added you would think that this was always the always the plan if you didn't know any better. In particular those times where Hals takes a second to think about what he's doing as if he's gained a moment of lucidity from an outside force controlling him.

As for Emerald Twilight - I' not a DC or Comics fan, or not in the traditional sense, but I've heard of Emerald Twilight. It's both funny and sad that "fridge-ing characters" comes from DC, and this infamous storyline. My fav Green lantern has to be John stewart, with a Goatie from JLU. Such a badass character.

Here is an idea. Alex gets put into the refrigerator like before. But comes back as some type of ice theme character maybe undead like a vampire or something. And she works with the new Green Lantern for a bit but is slowly giving into rage and or losing her humanity with everything that has happened and happing. She eventually becomes a villain/foe for the new Green Lantern. But when the New Green Lantern meets evil/possessed Hall, he has a understanding of how grief and trauma as well as evil influences can turn a good person evil. Using this he is able to in some way help Hall and down the line Alex. I’m not saying this is perfect and it is just an outline but I think it could be more interesting then what we got.

This "event" is a precursor to what would later happen to Wally West, the 3rd flash. The way they handled his character (and his family) after they brought back the 2nd flash is even worse than the aftermath of emerald twilight. They fixed it eventually but the damage to the coherent narratives around the flash is forever damaged unless they pretend some things like what happened in the past decade didn't happen

I would argue that fringing is bad but it doesn't just happen with women characters either and I agree it's better if no one was in the fringe

was never a GL guy but the lore was interesting, i had heard about the fridge thing and that gail simone had a problem with it, nice to have the whole story on that, by the way i like the vtuber thing and you should certainly bring it out more, this was fun nice video

I never followed GL, but I read some of the introduction to Kyle because a friend was really into GL (and was livid about Emerald Twilight). My first guess when reading the dynamic between Klye and Alex was that they were setting up Kyle finally realizing that Alex deserved the ring more than he did and give it to her. I seriously thought they were going to make her the new Green Lantern until the damn fridge.

I like both looks, you're usual and new. I always heard of the story and knew about woman in fridge but never really went into the story. Now that I know it wow is it insane how things escalated.

First off, love the VTuber model. Simple design, but not plain or drab.

I really enjoyed this vid on an old, albeit infamous comic story. I would like to see more stuff like this, going over older media for better or for worse. Though not to the detrimrnt of your other work; I like your takes on current media events.
