In England we get our own butter pots when dining out. Pointless breaking bits off, as creates crumbles and toast eill get cold. Best to butter toadt whilst itd hot

Hey everyone, don’t listen to this lady. Every modern etiquette guide I’ve consulted has stated that for SLICED bread like toast, buttering the whole piece and biting directly from it is perfectly acceptable. Yes, even in formal business settings. Breaking off pieces only applies to rolls, baguettes, or any other irregularly shaped bread where neatly buttering it and biting it is not feasible.

This is incorrect. This rule applies to bread and rolls, it does not apply to toast. Breakfast toast should be buttered while still hot. You also don’t need to break off a piece (that’s also for bread and rolls), just bite it.
