Id also buy a multimeter, to see voltage or amp output.
Useful for items such as power supplies.
You can also check to see if a remote works using a mobile phone camera (it can detect the IR, which your eyes cannot).

Thanks for this video, I see on your recent videos a year later and your still doing it so it’s a proven fact that it’s a good field to go into.

I’m off to car boot tomorrow. Will keep a look out

just a little tip with batteries, don't store in a metal tin, and store individually in plastic grip bags or similar, so they cannot touch each other or other metal and short circuit, potentially causing a fire

I’m delighted to hear that you recycle ♻️ your used batteries 🔋 George!!
I’m a bit of a recycling freak if I’m honest! 🤣
I’m still loving your videos by the way!! 👏👏

Quick point on your multi power adaptor. If you look closely at the socket on the radio it shows a little + sign pointing to the middle dot. This means the positive terminal (+ volts, +ve) should be in the middle (tip). You should be able to adjust whether the +ve is on the tip or the ring (outer) by spinning around the adapter that goes on the end of the cable (normally there is a guide line which indicates if +ve or -ve will be on the tip depending on which way you put it on). A lot of times it may not matter and they'll just work anyway but you may get something that NEEDS the voltages the correct way around (might not work, might blow internal fuses or chips).

George Ross, I would recommend that whenever you have a piece that doesn't work, always look to see what you can get for it in faulty condition, especially that Kenwood piece, that could sell easily for spares and repairs.

I'd definately invest in a 12v power inverter for the car to be able to test 240v appliances 👍

I bought a vac the other day for £10 and it literally burnt out when I tested it. The guy who seemed really genuine had given me his number and when I rang it it was for a certain type of It's a learning curve and the only fail I've had in three years. And I do judge on looks normally - if someone won't look me in the eye when I ask if it works then it probably won't. Great video - I never knew about those replacement battery springs I'm defo going to get some of those.

What would you do with a boom box with non working tape player ? Worth having a look and see if I can get it going, just curious what you'd do ?

Great Video George, I've been picking up a few electricals and so far I've been quite lucky when testing them, good information about your testing kit and how you go about testing your pickups, Shame about the duds but we can't win them all.👍

I’d recommend picking up some Eneloop AA & AAA rechargable batteries. I have a bunch I bought off Amazon in 2010 that still perform well nine years later(!). You can get cheaper rechargables from Ikea that are highly rated (some say they are debranded Eneloops but not sure). For cheap normal batteries in bulk: Ikea or 7dayshop are good value. Prob key to all this is a decent charger.

Thanks for the tip about cheap battery spring replacements from China 👍

I've always been really scared of buying 2nd hand electrical, best it probably doesn't work..worse it will blow up ! I picked up my first last week a VHS to DVD recorder, only inspired to do so because of the videos on here, I thought it wouldn't work but it does perfectly! I paid £4 for it lol and it sells between 150-170 ! I am well chuffed and will now look out for more electricals !
