Chris Darnell is at the controls of the Shockwave Jet Truck as he takes the stage at Naval Air Station Oceana for a dry run on Oceana's Runway 23L. Shockwave is a crowd favorite of the NAS Oceana Airshow and performed this dry run just prior to the Fleet taking the stage. Chris would later challenge Gary Ward with his absolutely beautiful MX2 to a race.

For those wondering what a dry run is, understand that there are a few acts the Shockwave Jet Truck performs at airshows across North America, and this also applies for every jet powered vehicle that appears on the airshow circuit.

A dry run, like this video shows, is simply the driver of the jet vehicle showcasing the vehicle to the crowd without any other acts in the air or in the aerobatic box. The vehicle and only the vehicle has the stage and the runway to do whatever show it wants (usually showcasing a lot of fire and smoke), and the dry run part is an actual firing of the engines to achieve maximum speed (or close to it) down the runway without any aircraft in the air. This kind of act is as popular during the day as it is during a night show.

Finally, jet vehicle owners will sometimes take some sort of role in a larger and more choreographed and scripted act featuring one or more aircraft in an amazing smoke and fire display. Examples in the past include the X-Team and the Masters of Disaster, to name a few.

We lost Shockwave and its legendary driver today at Battle Creek. Chris Darnell was by all means an amazing showman who even with a machine that would make it hard to be humble, was one chilled-out nice guy. The Airshow world will never forget his showman spirit and the machine he handled so well.
