These women are selling homemade beer-- despite the fact that alcohol is forbidden by both the government and Islam.

The women brew it from whatever grain they have on hand – usually sorghum, since it’s cheap.
The more it bubbles, the more alcohol it contains.

By afternoon it’s already turning sour, and then it’s a race to sell it by day’s end. Luckily, they have plenty of clientele.

The men have staked out almost every square inch of nearby shade. Like any good businesswoman, the women are happy to give prospective customers a free taste.
