PYXIS 6K - One week in Tuscany

Last week I had the pleasure of travelling to Italy to do a food shoot for a week with the new Blackmagic PYXIS 6K

This was a commercial shoot, not just a camera test so naturally came with the normal pressures of real world shoots.

The client - The Fish Site and Mauritz in parcticular have very kindly said I can include some of the shots in this video! They will be producing a cookbook and series of delicious recipes which I can 100% vouch for!

It was an incredibly fun shoot and such a stunning location, the PYXIS performed really well. And I can't wait to take it out on some more shoots over the next few weeks!

I own the Canon 50mm FD 1.8 and I love it! Mine is 1980’s build. The insight you shared in this video is fresh air from all of the PYXIS unboxing and first impressions.

Could not agree more about image quality, this is why I am still using the Panasonic Varicam 35. :)

Hello, thanks for your reviews. However there huge compresion artifact like you exported on low bitrate H264 or H265. looks soft and with a lot of compression artifact. IDK if you can fix that, that would be lovely. Regards

Wow, this was a great, real-world use review. Specs are always important, but hearing about someone's actual USE of the camera is insightful. Thanks for going into so much detail.

I have edited a little bit of BRAW footage, but none that required noise reduction. How do you think the CPU friendly BRAW footage with noise reduction is compares to other RAW footage, and even non-RAW footage?

FWIW, none of my clients currently accept BRAW footage, so I'm hoping Blackmagic will opt to add ProRes in the future.

You can fix the rolling shutter with the gyro image stabilization in resolve. just add the effect and bring it down to 0. cleans up the rolling shutter a ton. ( just remember to put in camera/lens settings while your shooting.)

Thanks Dale for sharing your experience in such detail, you are providing good educational content to many people starting with Pyxis and Black magic. I wonder if it would have been better to shot on 6K (full res of the sensor) and just edit on a 4K timeline. The image is better when you shot in 6K and you get more detail, dynamic range and less noise. And Davinci can handle the downscaling from 6K to 4K flawlessly in real time (also you can use proxies if your computer is not powerful enough). By shooting in 6K FF you also make better use of the full resolution of the optics of the Canon FD lenses. I really see no point in shooting in 4K just to match the less performing B cam. It should always be the other way around: the B cam should adapt to the A cam requirements. JMHO

Thanks for sharing your experience Dale. The orientation of those ports does seem to be a bit of a miss. Given the power consumption, v-mount seems to be more the way to go - going for a huge BPU battery, I'd worry about snapping the battery mount tabs as there's a lot of leverage from the battery if you knock it. Maybe it's built solidly enough though?

I am curious what the total weight of this rig is, especially when compared with something like the Ursa Cine 12k.

Tilta made a V mount extension plate that directly connects to the Zcam. Because first cameras had the flush at the back as well. Now the new Zcam line is off tilt . I don’t know if the same plate will actually work for black magic pix. It be interesting to see if it would or if Tilta will come out with a solution.
