Very interesting photos. They capture the time when my own family emigrated to Australia in the 1860s. The pioneering spirit was just incredible and my great grandma, who had an incredibly hard life, lived until she was 99 years old!

This is like time travel back into our past. It’s amazing to watch how the world was back then.

Mate, I thoroughly enjoyed your presentation. Seeing the old photographs & your narrative accompanying them was well done. I’m a proud Aussie & you are enabling people from around the world a glimpse into our past. My Mum was 3 years old in 1954 when her family came out from England. This is my heritage!

Torres Strait Islanders wearing the headresses that occur in many rock art pictures.
Thanks for showing. 👍

Thank you for your work, especially the 1899 photograph of the ship on Circular QuaiY on September 1899, my Croatian grandfather left Sydney for Cape Town to work as a bricklayer building a school there and then returning to Croatia.
He came to Australia to work as a shearer, I guess it must have been a few years away from his wife and first son.born in 1895.
These pictures from around those years plus the old Sydney buildings with dates on their fronts, help me to "see" the Sydney and the Australia my grandfather saw.
Later in 1927, my mother's Croatian uncle emigrated to New Zealand and then, again, to Perth from New Zealand after the end of WW two.
He always kept in touch with news from Perth, with his brother in Argentina, my mother's father, who had emigrated from Croatia to Argentina inn1901, and my Ciiatian father in 1925 ..so Australia was always a conversation theme around the table in my family.
Then in 1980, my pregnant wife and I emigrated to Sydney from Buenos Aires in Argentina.
A tale of five continents.
Europe, Australia, Africa, South America, and then Australia again, always working and living.

Good pictures well worth a watch. Unlike the USA, many of Australia's early buildings still survive, (especially away from the capital cities).

Thank you for these pictures and the information about places and dates. I looked up the newspaper articles on Trove about the Cootamundra train accident. It was very sad. At least 30 people died.

I grew up swimming in a winter swimming club at Wylies Baths at Coogee.
Had no idea it was named after Mina Wyllie.
Thank you.

My grandmother was born in Melbourne in 1885 & passed in 1978. I have a professional photo of her aged about 5. Also a photo of her husband, my Pa about the same age. No they didn’t know each other then lol. He’s wearing velvet with longish blonde hair. Mum gave me the photos and I’ve had them professionally framed together. And other pics of my Nan & Pa as they aged, a beautiful couple. 💞

This emphasises that the 'good old days' are now.
Life was very hard before about 1900

It was during Askin's time in office that many of the old Sydney classic buildings were torn down, corruption at its finest, appalling in wiping the existence of such amazing architecture and history....
