A great performance by both of you. Rest in peace, Ed Vollmer (1952-2023), you will be dearly missed.

What a beautiful rendition of this haunting classic. The lyrics remind us that no matter who we love or how long we live, nothing is permanent but only on loan.

My great grandfather, also a WW2 Infantryman, would sing me this song when I was small. Very special to me.

My mother used to sing this song to me and my brother when we were little. Now I'm singing it to my three year old. Amazing how time flies and how some songs just don't get old.

Oh I was looking for a duo like this. This is the best way to play it, I think. You both are great.
The lyrics are morbid, it has that hard-life pragmatism of the West, especially how the storyteller explains how he healed himself and how bitter it must feel.
Though I'm not American, I surely enjoy this song, and I really liked your version.
Hugs from a fellow guitarist from Belgium.

I filed this under my folk music category. I sang the last verse to my daughter and she was so startled and amused, I had to look up all the verses. Then I looked up this performance. Well done Haley and and Ed! It is comic and morbid, laughing at death and humanity. Very appropriate for 19th century America, where the average life expectancy was in the 40s.
