In June 1989, Chinese government troops violently cracked down on student protesters in Tiananmen Square in a deadly massacre. One unforgettable image from the incident was of an unidentified Chinese man who stood in front of a column of tanks on June 5, 1989. Watch the CBS Evening News' report on the iconic moment.

Tank Man is one of the bravest men to ever walk the planet. He saved lives by delaying those tanks.

This brought tears to my eyes. What a beautiful scene. A lone unarmed man standing up to tyranny and oppression and those foolish enough to think that you can rule with the gun. This man is a hero to humans of all nations of all religions of all races and all genders.

I love how people have a false memory of a supposed "massacre" that never happened.

Having a gun or a tank can be considered a form of military or technological superiority rather than physical superiority in a personal sense. Physical superiority typically refers to individual strength or prowess

“Bystanders rushed in to save him”

Yeah no way bro. Those were definitely plain clothes officers carting him away. That man is dead.

This did happen for a lot of us but not in the way the current footage shows. A lot of us remember him getting squashed. It's one of many Mandela Effects. This timeline's version isn't as newsworthy as the one where he got crushed by the tanks

Looking at the comments here, clearly most in the west don't Even know tankman accurately. He wasn't run over and the tanks were also leaving the square.

I've read tens of Medal of Honor citations, heard countless stories of acts of bravery in battle and disaster. Men and women who went above and beyond the call of duty to save others often at the expense of their own lives. Men who held necessary positions longer than was possible only for the chance that it might do some good. All of these people who acted so bravely deserve to be remembered and honored as the heroes they are. To me, though, Tank Man stands above them all. He had no mission to accomplish; he could save no one. Only the previous night these tanks and the men inside them had killed thousands of his countrymen. Despite this, Tank Man stood defiantly in the face of thousands of tons of destruction. He knew there was no fight to win, nothing to be gained by his opposition. Yet there he stands. My God it brings me to tears every time I think of it. I'm sure that of all of the billions of people who have ever lived, Tank Man is among the Greatest. Godspeed sir, you will not be forgotten.
