It's his own fault. He could've recovered from it with a six month rest as it was just tendonitis but instead he kept on playing and it became a chronic disease called tendonosis. This affected every aspect of his game including free kick, long shots, jumping etc. I know all this cause i had the same thing when i was sixteen and all the physios recommended rest for 8 months or so.
