In this video, I explain the definition of viscosity, a physical property of fluids. Three experiments are demonstrated to help comprehend how viscosity plays important role in the flow of liquids. Also, learn what are Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids. You can also learn how viscosity grades of lubricating oils (such as SAE and ISO grades) are defined.
When a liquid is sheared between two parallel surfaces at a given speed, viscosity is given as the ratio of the shear stress to the shear rate. This viscosity is known as the absolute viscosity or dynamic viscosity. Kinematic viscosity is defined as the absolute viscosity divided by the density of the liquid. The values must be taken in appropriate units as presented in the video.
