Donetsk and Luhansk declare independence, Russia recognizes them, they wait for Ukraine raction. Should Ukraine send tropps, these two new countries ask Russia for help, Russia moves in at their request to protect them. It is not an invasion.

Answer to the headline question: the humane West must support the recognizing (and join later ) because it should stop artillery shelling of the Donbass cities and towns.

Ukraine should give up those territories and immediately join NATO. Russia's goal is to keep those areas in dispute to keep Ukraine out of NATO. Let them go and join NATO then turn your back forever on Russia. The two "rebel" areas and Crimea are gone. Let it go.
