Grading For Equity was one I really liked - the author addresses all of the "what abouts" I'd had when administrators talked about things like eliminating zeros. An approachable pd book that helps you think through grading practices. Sarah Zerwin's Pointless is another good read for English teachers looking to move away from grading altogether.

Freewater is wonderful - just opens up a door into a part of America's history with slavery that I knew nothing about. I loved the historical aspects, my students enjoy the adventure of it all.

How to Hide an Empire was such a powerful mindset shift for me. It should be a mandated read for all US History teachers!!

Kelly Yang has quickly become my favorite author. Many people only know Front Desk, so I cheered when you held up New From Here and Finally Seen! The first is about her family’s experience during the pandemic (having to split countries), and the second made me cry & rededicate my career to teaching literacy and ESL. She has a new one coming out about the effect of social media in kids’ lives called Finally Heard, and she’s touring classrooms on the east and west coast. I think she’s still taking requests! Oh, and I’d be remiss if I forgot to mention her YA book Parachutes, about teenagers from China who are sent alone to attend HS in the USA and stay in host homes. It’s about so much more, and I think it’s really right up your alley! I don’t know Kelly or get paid to say this, I just really love her writing, honesty, and humor, and her books are always relevant.

I loved “How to Hide an Empire.” The original “Braiding Sweetgrass” is one of my favorite books, but the young adult version was a little disappointing. Before I read it, I was hoping to do a unit on it with my high school students, but decided not to after reading it.

Yes the historian was awesome. It had dark academic research and vampires and history

I really want to read Caste! I have the full adult version but I was watching some teacher's TikTok or Instagram reel today and she said to watch the movie and then I was like, hey! I have this. I'm getting it with this months audible credits, since I like listening to non-fiction on audio. I also want to finish Grading for Equity

Thanks for sharing your TBR list! I added a few to my own list. The Historian for years was my go-to recommendation for anyone who said they were looking for books like the DaVinci Code. It reminded me a lot of Arcangel (Daniel Craig BBC adaptation of a book). Also, Grading for Equity is solid, but if grading at your school is systemic (like it was at mine when I read it), I think it's best done as a group/team read. So much is about grading philosophy and policy that you may/may not be able to influence BUT to the "grading is the worst part of my job", it can definitely help an individual teacher better-evaluate their own systems. Like... do you need to grade as much as you are grading? Probably not. And I know a couple of folks who drastically changed some of their assignment policies that are both time-consuming to manage and not benefitting student learning/development.
