Within Temptation is a Dutch symphonic metal band founded in April 1996 by vocalist Sharon den Adel and guitarist Robert Westerholt. They have been classified by critics as gothic metal and symphonic metal, although each album contains other influences outside these genres.

Sharon has an INCREDIBLY beautiful voice. She's just as good live as she is in studio as well. I've always thought if they hadn't wanted to do metal that her and Tarja could have done opera. She actually has a song that is a duet with Tarja.

My all-time favorite Within Temptation song. I used this as a ring tone for my mother and still think of her as I listen to it. Sharon is an incredible performer, using what I call "hand dancing" as she sings like an angel. WT was my first addiction to Symphonic Metal, and now I have multiple bands. Does that mean Within Temptation is a gateway band?? Incredible live band, I've seen them thrice, which is pretty good for a California guy - they don't get out here very often. Can't tell you how many people I have successfully introduced to metal with this song alone. So glad you covered this song ... and did it justice.

I love the symphonic metal bands that I only discovered during lockdown but Sharon and Within Temptation have become a bit of an obsession. Anything from the Black Symphony concert (with live choir and orchestra) is stunning.

It’s always trippy seeing these old videos because she looks EXACTLY the same. Her voice and techniques have improved a lot over the years though! Check out Let Us Burn and The Purge—you’ll be shocked at the edginess and powerful belts this woman can pull out when she wants to. In these early years she definitely became very known for her sweet, flute-like high notes and has always had just a very beautiful clear tone but she used a lot more of her chest voice now to fit the heavier music they’ve moved to and has a gorgeous rasp in her lower tone. Can still hit those high notes though!

Of all the metal goddesses you've reacted to, Sharon has seemingly the closest style to your own very xpressive speaking voice, Maggie. Opera discourages the kind of breathiness & tight vocal turns of phrase in the head voice that I think musical theater and soundtrack and symphonic metal tend to encourage, if only to stay above the instrumental & be understood.

"Pretty metal" indeed. This track is very Kate Bush like.

Sharon goes between this type of very delicate and high head voice sound and a more mixed belt sound in her more recent records. i love WT, but may prefer her more mixed belt style of singing.

I would have so recommended you had reacted to this song performed at their amazing Black Symphony 2007 performance with the Metropole Orchestra....it is so much more powerful and beautiful than this, and Sharon is on FIRE in that one!

Man this brings me back. Used to love this band. Then saw them life, and absolutely loathed them for a while. (she was so anyoing with the thank you thank you every song) And later i started loving them again and apreciating the skills and her insane voice.

Now at age 48, birthday last week, Sharon's voice is still beautiful she has more depth with age of course... They just came out with a brand new song a week or 2 ago called don't pray for me... And we'll be restarting the tour with evanescence and we'll be spending October in North America with Iron Maiden... I shall have to find a way to see them for the 3rd time.
