Taiwan’s electronics industry features one of the few Taiwanese companies out there that has managed to cross the ravine from being a nameless manufacturer into an actual name brand.

Asus, or AsusTek as it is sometimes also called, started off making motherboards. It leveraged that skill into making computers for sale under other brands. But the company wanted to do more than just labor in the shadows for other people.

The company managed to navigate a tricky web of relationships to do so. And today, it markets and sells under its own name computers, laptops, and even high-performance gaming phones that regularly garner praise from YouTube tech reviewers. In this video we will trace their journey, review their strategy and more.

ASUS's ROG is definitely the gold standard for gaming PCs. Never knew it was a Taiwanese company.

ASUS motherboards were an insider's secret long before they were ever retailed to the DIY channel. There were a few outfits grey-marketing them into the USA in the mid-90s. I was in a related industry and had heard the gouge. I needed six for a project and tracked them down. Always outstanding, I have used nothing else since.

Are you planning on covering Gigabyte Technologies? They make great computer motherboards, just like ASUS. And do manufacturing in Taiwan too!

Another great company profile from one of YouTube's best channels.

ASUS produces some really great products. For advanced home users, ASUS Wi-Fi routers in particular are some of the best around, especially because the community supported "Merlin" firmware is just so good, and helps unlock some very useful features for advanced users. It's hard to find routers that has such great community support but with a firmware project like Asuswrt-Merlin it makes recommending ASUS routers really easy.

The fact ASUS is based in Taiwan and does a lot of manufacturing in Taiwan makes the choice really easy. Other router manufacturers like TP-Link are based in China, which is obviously problematic for network infrastructure.

Rocking a PC with an Asus motherboard connected to a Asus gaming monitor and a Asus mechanical keyboard, while typing this on a Asus Zenfone 8!
The company is a sleeping giant!

ASUS has been pushing out updates for my router for 7 years. It was a high end router when it came out, but it's still amazing.

Although ASUS does have a wide variety of products all under one brand, they did decide to create a separate brand for NAS devices: ASUSTOR. I wonder why they did that.

Could you do a video on D-Link? They are a very mysterious brand and also how do they compete against Tp Link, Asus and Cisco?

I think I first learnt about the existence of Taiwan, after I checked out about 15 years ago from where my ASUS laptop was from.

I used to be fairly blah on Asus Mobos, but the ROG I recently upgraded to is outstanding. Also, they answer the %*#$ phone, something uncommon with the Asiacos. Thanks for the vid. Your presentation is getting smoother and smoother.

I remember fondly my Asus P3B-F with the intel 440BX chipset running a Pentium 3 550MHz back in 1999. It was my first high quality motherboard and it gave very high performance with rock solid stability. Never once did it crash on me and this in the Windows 98 era of BSODs.

Very good video. I like your conclusion. Taiwanese tech brands have to struggle to get their names on the global popularity list. But.... take a look at the agreement talks for the construction of new projects such as the EV joint venture news.
