Update: On 12/6/24
This change in policy was set to take place on or after February 2025, but after a storm of backlash from medical professionals and people alike it seems that the company is now reversing its greedy policy change THANK GOODNESS.

After what happened to the CEO of United Healthcare yesterday, I find it baffling that Anthem, one of the largest medical insurers, has announced they no longer plan to pay for anesthesia care if a surgery or procedure exceeds a particular time limit. This change is set to take effect in Connecticut, New York, Missouri, and possibly Colorado (although it’s likely only a matter of time before they attempt to expand it further).

The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) has formally issued a statement condemning this decision, calling it a “cynical money grab.“This egregious policy breaks the trust between Anthem and its policyholders, who expect their health insurer to pay physicians for the entirety of the care they need," said ASA President Dr. Donald Arnold.

Could you imagine waking up from surgery only to be told that you are now responsible for paying out-of-pocket costs, potentially amounting to hundreds or thousands of dollars, simply because the procedure took longer than expected while you were unconscious?
This is outrageous. People already spend thousands of dollars a year on health insurance for themselves and their families. Now, these greedy executives are trying to exploit people even further.

The decision-makers at these large health insurers should reflect on the situation that occurred yesterday, as it sent a clear message:
No one is untouchable, and the decisions made purely out of greed have very real consequences for ordinary people. These decisions affect not only the individuals directly impacted but also their loved ones, potentially pushing people to their limits.

I don’t condone acts of violence, but I will say this: Anthem, your decision to implement this policy feels like a deliberate act of harm against every one of your policyholders. Anthem should seriously reconsider, especially given that the company reported a "24.12% increase in year-over-year net income to $2.3 billion as of June."

In the U.S., we should take a lesson from Canada. Their universal, publicly funded healthcare system provides comprehensive coverage for all citizens, demonstrating that they genuinely care about their people.

Imagine the meetings that put forth this concept of putting a time limit on surgery. How will they undercut their clients in 2025 ?

Happy holidays from your insurance company…..🎄😳
Any other company selling a good or service would never be able to get away with this… however with Insurance companies they are the one industry which always will have a customer no matter what.. its wrong and our leaders need to fix it.
