For anyone who's actually curious:

Escalators work by a series of panels under the platforms you stand on lifting the platforms up before going under the floor and bringing the platforms back down in a constant rotation. The lines and grooves Riggy mentioned are to keep the platforms in place and keep them from coming out of line in addition to sweeping off any dirt from the bottom of your shoes.
