Rare Giant Squid Over 12 Feet Long Captured On Camera

A giant Architeuthis dux squid was caught on camera when it swam into a harbor in Japan on Christmas Eve. The young squid is estimated to be 12 feet long, and scientists say the species can reach over 40 feet in length.

Sheesh, the camera man recording this had to have been right next to it! Considering this is the creature behind legends of kraken attacking ships, doesn’t this one seem rather docile? Humboldt squids aren’t nearly as large as giant/colossal squids, but they seem to have a much closer attitude to the kraken that giant squids were supposedly the inspiration from. Maybe all those fishermen and superstitious folks just saw washed up giant squid carcasses and mistaken/exaggerated attacks from multiple Humboldt squids as attacks from one giant cephalopod? Maybe the kraken wasn’t quite a mythical counterpart to the giant squid, but a mythical amalgamation of giant and humboldt squids, having the size and shape of one and the attitude of the other.
