Was All Stars 8 A Mistake?! (Understanding What Went Wrong)

All Stars 8 premiered in the summer of 2023, with a cast comprised of big names like Jimbo or Kandy Muse. Yet, given that the season went on to have a really mixed reception from fans, what exactly went wrong??

forever disappointed about the mistreatment of jessica wild... she deserved to be in that finale, and with the top 2 format she would've gotten like half the wins

The cast was imbalanced. They should have either stuck with the early outs theme or heavy hitters. What we got instead was majority of early outs + a handful of the most successful queens from the show.

i think the biggest mistake production did was structuring the entire season around one queen to win

One thing that irked me a lot about AS8 was how they treated Darienne. It made sense that her storyline would revolve around her dramatic weight loss, it is no doubt impressive and inspirational. But it’s like the show couldn’t evaluate her objectively without mentioning her former weight at every turn. Every time she turned a look, the critiques were all about how she looks good “now”. It’s like a fat person being told they’re “brave” for wearing a crop top. The way the show treated Darienne was as if she’d never lost the weight.

I’m still annoyed that the producers barely even attempted to do anything with MKD’s and Darienne’s decades long friendship. AS1/2/5/8, even AS7 and S15 were equally predictable as AS8 was, but there was something almost… exhausting about AS8 to me? I’m not a big Jimbo or Kandy fan so that plays into it, but I mostly think I have all stars fatigue

All stars should have been like the Olympics, every 4 years. It’s not “all stars” when it’s “all fillers”.

At the top 3, if Kandy had eliminated Jimbo, RuPaul was gonna chime in and say, "No one is going home tonight." Trust me, producers had a plan to keep Jimbo in the game. Think about it. When has Drag Race ever gone into a finale with a top 2? It's always 3 or 4 and then reduced to a top 2 for the final lipsync. This was a first.

I know Jimbo fans like to believe that "the season wasn't rigged for her, she just had what it takes to win a competition", but truth is: this season was made to crown her. There's no previous All Stars, neither 2 nor 5, that it was so obvious. She didn't even belong to the US franchise, and she immediately return for an All Stars season after being "unfairly" eliminated while RuPaul was coockoo crazy obsessed with her. Like, let's just be honest: AS8 flopped because they couldn't care less for any other queen on the cast, all that mattered was giving RuPaul's favorite another go.

They really missed out on doing the early outs season, like regardless of who went home early we wouldve still got queens going from early outs to frontrunners and finalists and wouldve been so satisfying to watch either way, they shouldve just saved the heavy hitters (Jimbo Kandy Jessica Alexis Heidi and Darienne) for a superstars season or smth

if y'all need a pallet cleanser from All Stars 8-9 PLEASE watch drag race Philippines it's absolutely worth reading the subtitles, if that's something you struggle with idk, the drag is amazing and it's really reminiscent of early drag race plus the untuckeds are good cause they're sponsored by Absolut so the girls get WASTED season 3 is airing now but you should definitely start from the first season

They just didn’t know what to do with the cast.

Over editing, not letting queens have fun, most used to be funny queens (Heidi for example) yet the editing and treatment made them unwatchable and sad.

Jimbo should've been casted for global and this cast should've stuck with the first out theme or the villains vs heros type of cast
