Aftermarket studs can do this. Get oem studs.

Over time as bolts are put on and out back on the stretch, a fully tightened bolt can expand around 0.003” of an inch every time it is put back on. I am in a class where we learn all about this.

I had that happen on my motorhome after new tire's installed by Goodyear dealer, I had driven about 150 miles when passing a tractor trailer as soon as crossed center line all the studs snapped and both tires on that side came off, it turned out the Goodyear dealer used a big rig impact to over tighten which weakened (overstretched) the studs.

This is why using an impact is bad for putting wheels on. Also could be a shot wheel bearing that heated up those bolts and they snapped.

Should he get compensated for that or is the fault on the driver due to wear and tear

I had mine go at 7am Saturday morning.
Had spacers 1 1/2, never again.
Tire store only put six lugs on the inside.
With a 5000# camper in the bed, i was screwed.
My tire rolled into traffic.
I was out of my truck chasing the tire, others slowed and stopped.
Unfortunately an 80 year old blind guy, doing 80mph hit the tire right before i could get to it.
Picked the tire up with the wrecker, a mile up, on the other side of the road.
Thank god the cop saw it as he was coming to the scene.
I feel for this guy, it sucked.
Especially because my camper in the bed was 12' tall, then had to go on a trailer.

None of this would've happened on a Suburu
