I have been practicing silence for many years. When I was young (up to 30-35yo), I was very reactive and impulsive. It is quite challenging at times, to remain silent when you're filled with emotions.
But at the end you get your points. You don't have to apologize for hurting someone right back, when they hurt you verbally. You come back stronger and have things to say in a proper manner, being constructive. And the other person is the only one who savagely attacked you, saying nasty things. There was no exchange of nastiness, so nobody can say: 2 wrongs don't make it right.
They widely practice that in Japan's culture.
