Poonamallee, situated to the west of Chennai is a part of the Tiruvallur district. Bengaluru-Chennai Highway, Poonamallee-Avadi High Road and the Chennai Outer Ring Road form a junction at Nazarathpettai in the north-western border of the locality. This junction is popularly known as the Nazarathpet Junction. JJ Nagar, Ambal Nagar, Jeevan Prakash Nagar and DRR Nagar are other residential localities near Poonamallee.

Manufacturing companies like Schneider Electric India Private Limited and HIACC Engineering and Services Private Limited are situated within the locality. Krishna Industrial Estate, Anna Industrial Estate, Vyasarpadi Industrial Estate, DLF IT Park and the Ambattur Industrial Estate, hosting many macro & micro scale industries, manufacturing units and IT companies are situated within a 10 to 15 km radius.

While Holy Crescent, Narayana, St.Joseph, Saint Paul's Matriculation School, Panimalar Engineering and Medical Colleges, Jaya College of Engineering and Technology and the SKR Engineering College are some of the educational institutions present within the locality, Mangalam Hospital, Be Well Hospitals and the Panimalar Medical College Hospital and Research Institute are situated within 5km.

Though one will find many shops, supermarkets and small shopping complexes in Poonamallee that cater to the residents’ daily shopping requirements, there are no shopping malls nearby.

Over the weekends, one can either head to the famous Varadaraja Perumal Temple situated within the locality or simply go to Sri Vigneshwara Theater or the Gokulam Cinemas to watch a movie.

The Chennai Outer Ring Road, Poonamallee High Road, Poonamallee-Avadi High Road, Trunk Road, Mumbai Highway, Vellore-Chennai Road and Mangadu Road are major stretches of inter and intra-city connectivity in Poonamallee. Chennai Metropolitan Transport Corporation buses and autos are readily available along the major junctions of the locality. Poonamallee Bus stand, Poonamallee Bus Depot and Poonamallee Mofussil Bus stand are the major bus stations here. Avadi houses the nearest railway station, which is around 14 km away, Chennai International Airport in Meenambakkam is about18 km away via the Jawaharlal Nehru Road.

Poonamallee is likely to get a metro station in 2025, under the Phase-2 expansion of Chennai Metro Rail near the Poonamallee bypass. It will be a part of the 26.1 km stretch connecting the Lighthouse with Poonamallee Bypass.

Traffic snarls during peak hours on primary roads and waterlogging during monsoons are the major concerns of the residents of Poonamallee.

Excellent connectivity via a wide network of roads, variety of plot options, proximity to employment hubs and the prospects of future development are some of the reasons driving real estate sales in Poonamallee. However, traffic jams on major roads during peak hours and waterlogging during monsoons can be a bit of an issue.
