How to Build Easy and Economical Custom Interior Doors ep4

I needed custom doors for my basement because of the low ceilings. Unfortunately when you order short doors, the factory just cuts the bottom off leaving a door that is very unproportional. I didn't want to spend the time or money building frame and panel doors, so after a week of racking my brain I came up with this method. Each door cost less than $50.00

You wouldn't believe how much this helps me. I have to modify a 20" x 80" hollow core door to accept PVC louvered kits for a return intake, or go with Rockler's basswood louver blades. I'm still not decided on how to accomplish a return intake door, but the odd size has me leaning toward having to build one.

Great way to upgrade those hollow core doors! Building a wood door isn't cheap, so this is a great alternative if you're doing many of them on a budget!.

Easy and with few tools.... The guys starts right away in a nice shop with a giant table and all the little tools and specialized techniques. When you're an expert talking to an intermediate person.

We have been giving our hollow core doors a facelift, end up with a very similar look, (except we painted ours), simply cut 1/4" underlayment into 4" wide strips, (5.5" for the bottom) and glue/nail onto door. Prime & paint. Ends up under$20/door, and nothing in the landfill.

This is an older video - but it was really useful in giving me an idea on how I want to make up a few custom doors for my own basement that has a bathroom and utility room door that have duct work making them only about 6' tall. Thank you!

I just replaced all of my doors interior and exterior with this design but my doors are solid wood rather than this honeycomb style. They look great and improve the property significantly.

Did you rabbit one side only for the panels to go in? How did you treat the raw edge of the original face panels so that it's edge grain is not visible? What is the original thickness of you door? 1-3/8"?
What is the thickness of the MDF panel so that the recess is equal both sides? I have 10 existing hollow core doors that require your modification in order to match new construction with Craftsman two-panel stile and rail doors. I prefer to use your method to avoid errors in match existing hardware prep locations for hinges and passage sets.
